Colorado EMT IV Certification

Course Description

Approved by the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE)

This EMT IV Certification Course provides Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) with the knowledge and practical skills necessary to initiate and maintain intravenous (IV) access. The course is designed in accordance with CDPHE guidelines and prepares students for certification as an IV-certified EMT in the state of Colorado.

  • Anatomy and physiology of the circulatory system
  • Indications and contraindications for IV therapy
  • Equipment selection and preparation
  • Venipuncture techniques and site selection
  • IV fluid administration and regulation
  • Identification and management of complications
  • Infection control and safety protocols
  • Documentation and legal considerations

Format and Duration

This course includes both didactic instruction and hands-on practical training, culminating in a skills verification session and a written examination. Students must successfully perform IV insertions under the supervision of a qualified instructor and demonstrate competency in all required skills.

The course is held over three consecutive days, starting on the date listed in the "Upcoming Course Dates" section.

After the 3-day classroom portion of the course, students will be required to obtain IV access in a clinical setting under the supervision of an approved proctor. Additional steps to attend clinical rotations will be provided after registration.

Prerequisites

  • Current Colorado EMT certification
  • BLS certification (AHA BLS for Healthcare Providers or equivalent)
  • Good standing with the Colorado EMS provider registry


    Proof of the following vaccines:
  • Negative background check
  • TB/PD/Quantiferon
  • TDAP
  • MMR
  • Flu
  • Hepatitis B
  • Varicella
  • COVID-19 (or declination form)


    Upon successful completion of the course and clinic portion, participants will be eligible for IV endorsement through CDPHE and may begin performing IV therapy within their EMT scope of practice under medical direction.

Course Cancellation Policy

Courses that DO NOT meet the minimum course enrollment will be cancelled 10 days prior to the first day of the scheduled class. Students who have registered will be notified by email and will receive a full tuition refund.

Students who cancel their registration prior to the first day of class will be charged a 10% administrative fee based on the course tuition that will be subtracted from their refund.
